At the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix, Mercedes AMG had a challenging weekend but managed to achieve solid points. Lewis Hamilton finished 5th after a race that saw some early issues, including carbon fiber damage from an incident with Sergio Perez. Despite this, Hamilton’s race strategy allowed him to hold off Carlos Sainz and protect crucial points for the team. George Russell, who opted for a one-stop strategy, finished 7th. Russell's strategy was a gamble that didn’t quite pay off, with tire degradation limiting his ability to maintain position. Both drivers struggled with the W14’s performance, especially in the first sector of Suzuka, which is known for its technical corners and high-speed sections.

In terms of qualifying, Mercedes faced difficulties as their car showed weaker performance compared to Red Bull and Ferrari. Hamilton managed to qualify 7th, ahead of Russell who qualified 8th, but both were notably off the pace of the leading teams. Their car struggled with rear-end grip, a key issue at Suzuka's demanding first sector. 

Suzuka has been a historically challenging track for many teams due to its combination of fast and slow corners, and Mercedes' struggles here reflected the limitations of their car’s setup for such a track. Despite these setbacks, the team’s focus remained on minimizing points losses to Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship. While they couldn’t challenge for podiums, they adapted their strategies to try and capitalize on opportunities during the race. 

Overall, the 2023 Japanese GP was another race where Mercedes had to focus on strategy and damage control, with the team still working to improve their overall competitiveness in comparison to their rivals.
