In the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Mercedes AMG experienced another challenging race, finishing with both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell in the points but far from the podium. Hamilton placed 6th, while Russell finished 8th, both struggling with tire degradation and difficult race conditions. Hamilton's race was impacted by an unfortunate pit stop timing, where he pitted just before the Safety Car was deployed, which dropped him down the order. Russell, who had a good start, faced his own difficulties with the restart and dirty tires, which cost him positions despite a strong initial performance. 

The Mercedes W14 car showed a lack of outright pace, especially in comparison to the dominant Red Bulls, and while they had some competitive battles with Ferrari and Aston Martin, they couldn't break into the top ranks. Both drivers expressed frustration over the car's performance, with Hamilton noting the need for improved confidence in the car's setup to unlock better pace. 

In terms of the team's history, Mercedes has been a consistent contender in the hybrid era of F1, with multiple drivers' and constructors' championships under their belt. However, 2023 marked a struggle to close the gap to Red Bull, even with some notable podium finishes and podium battles. 

Azerbaijan’s street circuit, with its challenging corners and long straights, is a tough venue for any team not at the very top of its game, and Mercedes found itself grappling with this reality. Despite strong showings from their drivers in previous seasons, the 2023 race highlighted areas in the W14’s setup that still need refinement to compete more effectively against their rivals.
